The Amherst Arsenal GU12 team fought their way to the championship of their division at the Gates Metros Soccer Tournament the weekend of July 17-18.   Their chances looked slim after a 1-0 defeat to the Spencerport Strikers in their first game. But coaches, Steve & Lorraine Myers and Nick Alonge, made a strategic adjustment and the girls rallied by effectively implementing an offensively-oriented formation for the next three games. They defeated the Southern Tier team 5-2 , Chili Fire 1-0, and the Honeoye Falls Blaze 2-1. Brilliant offense was played by Leah Bookbinder, Marissa Birzon, McKenna Geiger, Cara Manzella, and Grace Windschitl. Christina Alonge, Melissa Helm, Audrey McNamara, and Alea Manzella fervently controlled the midfield while Alexa Bradley, Valerie Cornell, and Pamela Myers were persistently solid on defense. Superior goal keeping by Cara Manzella and Pamela Myers helped to assure the team’s championship. Their determination and teamwork were keys to their success. Unable to participate, but supporting the team were coach Zvi Sharf and fellow teammates Marah O’Connor, Sarah Scolnick, and Olivia Sharf. Coach Steve stated, "I am particularly proud of the fact that all of the players had an equal part in the team’s success."
