NEW RULES THIS YEAR - Playing Up an Age Group in Travel
New rules starting September 2008 !!!!!!!!!

We aim to offer the best soccer coaching services and place our players & teams in positions where they are most suitably challenged.

STARTING IN SEPTEMBER 2008, ASA WILL NO LONGER REQUEST PLAY-UP REQUESTS FROM PLAYERS OR PARENTS AT ANY AGE GROUP.  ALL FUTURE SITUATIONS WILL BE OFFERED TO PLAYERS BY THE DIRECTOR OF COACHING THROUGH HIS OBSERVATIONS THROUGHOUT THE PRIOR YEAR AND DISCUSSIONS WITH COACHES AND PERFORMANCE OF THE PLAYER AT ASSESSMENTS.  THE CLUB ENDEAVORS TO MAINTAIN CONSISTENCY WITHIN OUR AGE GROUPS AND WILL NOT MOVE PLAYERS BECAUSE THE PARENT THINKS THEIR CHILD SHOULD PLAY UP OR BECAUSE A PLAYER WANTS TO BE WITH FRIENDS.  THIS IS GOING TO BE A RARE INSTANCE WHEN APPROVED AND WILL BASED SOLELY UPON THE SOCCER ABILITY OF THE PLAYER INVOLVED.

Current players aged 11 + may be grandfathered if they have been allowed to playup in the past.  ASA reserves the right to deny this to any player who does not measure up to the standard of the older age group.

  • If according to the club’s Director of Coaching and the Travel Coordinator the player will be an influential or impact player (will be in the top third)  in the older age group, then the DOC will approach the parents and player about the possibility of playing up.  This means that a player must be clearly an "A" player AND one of the top 8-10 players in ability in the entire older age group.

  • We will try do what we feel is best for the player, not the coach or the parent .  Carpooling, siblings, school friends or a desire to play for a particular coach are not valid reasons for a play-up.

  • At certain times, we may allow a number of players for a second or third team to play up to allow the formation of a team.  This is usually a "b" or "c" team and is allowed because not doing so would deny many children a chance to play (ie:  we have 8 each-13 year olds and 8 each 14 year olds after forming initial teams.  in this circumstance, we will form a 14 year old team to allow all to play and place it in a low division)  This is not considered a play up.   It is not considered a play-up for ASA to allow a U8 to play U9 travel soccer.  This also will be at the DOC’s discretion based upon his observations of the player and their readiness for travel soccer.  A returning U8 player (that played the year at U9) may be required to spend another year at U9.
